Taking a HARD look at the Business of Politics

AT&T - War Profiteers? And the DOJ approved the merger, sheesh.

It looks like there’s a good possibility that AT&T should be added to the list of Iraq War Profiteers along with Halliburton, Titan, CACI, and Blackwater.

AT&T has close to a monopoly on phone service in and out of Iraq and is gouging our GIs there. According to an article in the Prepaid Press, the American Legion has now taken up the cause and is fighting AT&T over this. Jeanne Gilbert, the Co-Chairman of Public Relations for the American Legion Department of New York state, is the point person on this issue. This is what the article had to say:

What raised Gilbert’s eyebrows was the estimate quoted in the Star Ledger from The Prepaid Press article that AT&T may be realizing up to $46 million a year, at the expense of U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. With this in mind, Gilbert began reading the blogs and websites. “I found many, many websites and blogs that discuss the problem with the AT&T calling card program, said Gilbert. “I felt that it was a real problem that our troops were being charged that much money, that AT&T was the only calling card that could be used, and that the public was not aware of that. Gilbert then asked other Legion members if they had heard any similar feedback. He started receiving emails and letters, not only from returning soldiers, but from those still deployed.

It’s really important that we all remember the wholesale sellout of our troops when we hit the polls this November. We have to Lame Duck this administration before they do any more damage of this sort. We also have to put on the record with the FCC our opposition to the AT&T BellSouth Merger, which is scheduled to be decided possibly tomorrow. Putting more power into the hands of profiteers is a betrayal of all of us.
