FISA Cloture fails, Specter Votes RIGHT for the wrong reason

Well, even if Specter voted the right way for the wrong reason, I’m glad he did. The FISA bill was tabled. From Daily Kos earlier today re Specter and FISA; “Specter will vote against cloture because he’s having a hissy fit over his precious amendment not getting due consideration.” Confirmation from Specter’s office via Firedoglake comments (#67) “Just off the phone with Adam, Senator Specter’s National Security advisor. He told me Specter favors the amendment offered by Specter and Whitehouse. When I reminded him that no amendments will be allowed if he votes Yes on cloture,He replied that he believes Specter will vote NO on cloture.” It will come up again, and Chris Dodd will be leading the filibuster. YAY CHRIS DODD!!! Anyone who believes in Behavior Modification for the rest of the CongressCritters can help by Donating to Retire Chris Dodd’s Campaign Debt. If Dodd can report it RETIRED (or even mostly paid off) within the next day or two that will send a HUGE message to those fence sitters and Blue Dogs who don’t think that the American People care about Telecomm Immunity, the Constitution, or the Rule of Law.

I think we who called and faxed and emailed over and over and over finally made an impact on the other candidates as well. Obama and Clinton both showed up to vote against cloture. I hope they now realize that it’s what the American People want in a President. It’ll be interesting to see if they stand with Chris Dodd while he filibusters.

And Bush has to be worried. His threats didn’t work this time. Yet. Which means we have to keep the phone lines and fax lines burning, folks. From Glenn Greenwald on Bush’s hypocrisy with FISA:

The veto threat from the President is so unbelievably corrupt and manipulative that if our national press had even the smallest amount of critical faculties and understanding of the issues, that veto threat would be a major story. After all, how can the President possibly threaten the country that he will veto a law that he himself has claimed for months is indispensable for Protecting Us All?

But of course, Glenn, we all know why. Giving the Telecomms Immunity is the only way for Bush to ensure that the Telecomms don’t let out what Bush & Co. have been up to if they end up in court. And I agree with Glenn that the House is the only hope of stopping the PAA extension to the FISA bill.
