Taking a HARD look at the Business of Politics

The Bush who cried Wolf . . .

According to an article in the NY Times today, Bush’s assertions and evidence of Iran meddling in Iraq, presumably so he can use it as an excuse to start another lucrative war for his buds to profiteer on, are being met with nothing but skepticism.

Also transparent is how the Bush administration is trying to play this down so it doesn’t look like they’re trying to start another war, even if they are. Instead of presenting the evidence formally, it was instead presented in Baghdad by military officials during a background briefing. There could also be another reason for the low key approach: “They settled on an approach that sidelined senior officials including Zalmay Khalilzad, the American ambassador to Iraq, and John D. Negroponte, who until last week was the director of national intelligence. By doing so, they avoided the inevitable comparisons to the since-discredited presentation that Secretary of State Colin L. Powell made to the United Nations Security Council in 2003 asserting that Iraq had illicit weapons.”

The New York Times article ends with this paragraph, a quote from Philip Zelikow, former top Aide to Condoleeza Rice. ““People have lost their moorings,” Mr. Zelikow said. He said the administration was trying to overcome public distrust by asking, in essence, “Don’t you trust our soldiers?”” Mr. Zelikow, spinning this so it looks like we, the American People, don’t trust our soldiers is NOT gonna fly. We all know who we don’t trust, and it’s the idiot in the Oval Office, and his Top Dogs. Fool me once . . .
