The Impeach Cheney movement and Big Media
Because of Media Consolidation in the hands of conservative and predominantly white males, our media is sadly broken. Only when there is an overwhelming response to a movement or action on the web does it finally get any play on any of the Big Media outlets, and then it’s very slow, very small, and very limited. So when one of the big Newspapers does pick up a story, they’re to be congratulated for doing their job, since most aren’t doing it. They’d rather feed us the pablum of Brittney and Paris.
Today the Philadelphia Enquirer has printed an opinion piece (too bad they don’t consider it front page news like the rest of us) on the growing movement to Impeach Cheney, which has culminated in the House Judiciary Committee urging the House to proceed with hearings. At least the Inquirer is giving this some play. CBS4 in Florida (Judiciary Committee Member Wexler’s home state) is also giving this Cheney story some exposure, and a Miami Herald article for Cheney Impeachment was picked up in syndication.
I guess this story, coming on the heels of the embarassing and sparse Big Media coverage of Dodd’s courageous stand for the Constitution and the Rule of Law while meanwhile a Blogstorm on the issue was going on, is finally becoming big enough so that Big Media can’t ignore it without looking foolish, as they did with Dodd. What a sad state of affairs.
It’s time for Congress to fix our broken media. Which means fixing our broken FCC.
