Taking a HARD look at the Business of Politics

The Strange Bedfellows

Because the Fisa/PAA and Telecom Immunity “compromise” vote that just passed in the House today after much backroom dealing (with the telecoms writing the final draft of the FISA “compromise”, it’s rumored) is so very obviously unconstitutional and such a bitchslap to the American People and the Rule of Law, there has to be something done to stop it from going further, or if it does go further, a way to punish those who were the most instrumental in getting this passed for their Paymasters from the Telecoms.

So, what do we do? That’s where The Strange Bedfellows step in. The Strange Bedfellows is for anyone from either side of the aisle who is tired of this total trashing of our Constitution and The Rule of Law to benefit Special Interests. Many of the Netroots on the Left, ACLU supporters from both sides, and the Ron Paul pro constitution supporters on the Right have joined up. If you are sick to death of the direction our so-called representatives have taken, then you can join the Strange Bedfellows as a blogger and/or as a contributor. The idea behind the Strange Bedfellows coalition is spelled out here. In a nutshell:

So now that the coalition has formed, how does it plan to fight the revised FISA bill? In a blog post today, Greenwald indicated that the group’s campaign will be divided in two phases. “Phase I [will] entail an immediate ad campaign aimed at three key Democratic enablers of this bill — Hoyer, Chris Carney, and Blue Dog Rep. John Barrow of Georgia,” he wrote. “The reasons for targeting Hoyer are self-evident and were set forth yesterday, and the campaign against Carney — who has long been one of the Blue Dogs spearheading the effort behind this bill — is already underway and will continue.”

Phase II, Greenwald says, “will involve a massive money bomb.” This large fundraiser will be utilized in a number of broader civil liberty campaigns to “oppose and punish those vulnerable members of Congress who continue to support the evisceration of our constitutional framework and core civil liberties, while supporting candidates and office-holders who meaningfully oppose that assault.” As for what these campaigns will be, the “dates and other details for that will be announced shortly.”

And lest one snicker at this ambitious proposal, consider the fact that the group has managed to raise $90,000 in just the first 24 hours of its campaign. This number indicates there is a growing unrest with civil liberties activists.

When I made my donation a short time ago, I saw that the donations are now well over a quarter of a million bucks.

The initial targets of this coalition have pushed for telecom immunity while taking telecom money. It’s time to stop the buying of our government. More targets will be named in the future.
