Gamers and VoIP users lose the most with end of Net Neutrality

There’s an interesting article in an unlikely source. RampRate is a “Strategic Research” company aimed at Market Investors. They’ve posted an article entitled “A New Take on Net Neutrality” which gives their analysis of Interactive Gaming and Voip and why these two internet services will suffer the most if net neutrality isn’t reinstated. The bottom line is it’s a battle for Latency and Jitter. “Contrary to popular opinion, latency will not kill online video. After all, while a video that buffers for a longer period of time (or requires an advance download) is an inconvenience, it is one with which we coexisted not too long ago, and does not prevent the viewer’s eventual enjoyment of the sought-after experience . . . This being said, latency and jitter will kill VOIP as we know it. While this is a Bad Thing for anyone not selling voice over copper, out of all the evils that can come out of the loss of net neutrality, it is the most easily remedied . . . What will be murdered with no fallback or replacement is the nascent market of interactive entertainment – particularly online gaming.”

I wonder if anyone has brought this to the attention of the Gamers . . . and what their reaction might be.

One Slap to Gamers and VoIP users lose the most with end of Net Neutrality

  1. Vc Says:

What their take would be…. They would shrug and not “get it” - nor worry about it. Most online gamers are 12-20 year old males. They either don’t have any voting clout (due to age or lack thereof) or they don’t bother with voting if they’re old enough. As for “voting with their wallets” - if the whole scenario changes, that’s of no value either.

Now the big players in this SHOULD be the companies which produce those games. THEY are the ones who stand to lose the most (billions….), therefore it makes sense that they SHOULD be concerned.

Are they? I don’t know. While I play CRPGs, I only do the single player ones, I’ve NEVER been interested in “shared gaming” - my imagination is fulfilled without need to mess with online gamers most of whom are half the age of my DAUGHTER. Spare me….
