Green Awareness and the Media
With the alarming reports coming out in Green Niche Media Outlets, it leads me to wonder what in HELL is going on in Mainstream Media with this story. Yeah, Big Media will report that Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize, though of course they also have to quote one of the neocons slamming green and saying Gore doesn’t deserve it to point up their version of balanced reporting, but anything substantive or real that can be reported on Climate Change is left out or glossed over or watered down. All of the urgency is left out. Why?
It’s all about Dollars and Cents. Mainstream Media get their biggest chunk of revenue from corporate advertising budgets. And, since Corporations are still sucking on the Petroleum tit, and making damn near everything out of oil, it’s not going to stop anytime soon. So any story that might piss off an advertiser is “sanitized” so that people like Rupert Murdoch can continue to ride in corporate jets sans carbon offsets and corporations can continue to make everything out of oil, from the keyboard I’m typing on to the body parts of the car you gas up at the pump. Think about how bizarre it is that a major part of the cars we drive are now made of oil.
Lipstick, fertilizer, beverage bottles, pens, furniture, fabrics etc etc etc. It would be very hard for any of us to go a day without touching something made of oil. And whenever I point this out to my corporate acquaintances, they cite “cost of production” as the reason. But the cost AFTER consumption is much higher and until we start penalizing for this, the way California is now with Computer recycling fees, we won’t see any relief from these awful corporate decisions. At least not until the oil runs out.
True Sustainability threatens the underpinnings of NeoCon Economy 101, which is to turn us all into dumb consumers of things made of oil or farm subsidy crops. And when the oil runs out they’ll turn our economy upside down by pinning the price of food on the cost of ethanol, which is not only stupid but also is so unsustainable as to be laughable.
And reporting the real story is not in the best interest of those who profit on hiding the truth, whether from the products sold or from the ad budgets of those selling the products via mass marketing on push media.
Only by reading alternative news sources and green sites can we get the real scoop.
We who are Green need to openly and actively support alternative media in every way we can. The internet is our only free and open voice, since Mainstream Media won’t give us the real story where Climate Change is concerned.
The problem is that Mainstream Media owns the delivery systems for the internet, thanks to our head in the sand Congress and its lackluster oversight of the FCC, not to mention the blind spot DOJ has on this, and will continue to have now that a former AT&T Legal Hatchetman now heads up DOJ. The Telecommunications and Cable Companies are constantly lobbying congress and the FCC to turn the internet into just another push media, another version of the Home Shopping Network and Bud TV, so that our democratic voice is stifled and infomercials become our news. And this current Administration is inclined to let that happen since it’s a quid pro quo for AT&T and Verizon allowing the NSA’s illegal wiretaps. We who are Green need to support the Save The Internet coalition and protect our last free, open and democratically Green Voice.
