Media, Politics, and Women
With all the hoohaw in the Mainstream Media about Britney’s Gut and her being washed out at the ripe old age of, what is it? 25??? it’s made me think a lot about what Mainstream Media is doing to All Women. The white male owned and white male run mainstream media is trivializing us bigtime.
The body image thing is just amazing. Most women would KILL for a body like the one Britney Spears has now, so how is it that the Mainstream Media has declared that she’s FAT??? What is that telling our young women, how is it defining them? And why is it that most women would KILL for a body like Britney Spears has in the first place? What’s wrong with what we’ve got?
And then there’s the fact that the White Male Owned and Controlled Mainstream Media, in a time when We, The People, are trying to make our voice heard on issues like Iraq, Telecommunications, and Media Consolidation, feels that Prime Time and the Front Page are better used for Britney’s (mostly media induced) Bomb.
It doesn’t stop there.
America Ferreira, the endearing advocate for Real Women’s Bodies, by her portrayal of Ugly Betty on TV, has been PhotoShopped by Glamour Magazine and other Mainstream Media outlets. Most of the mags who carry her photo edit it to slim her down and make her into the Media Ideal Woman she’s been fighting so hard to decry. It points up who is really the Ugly one here.
Much as I may not personally agree with her religious agenda nor her policies on things like Iraq, Telecomm Policy, and Nuclear Power, my heart goes out to Hillary Clinton on what the Media is doing to her as well. She has to be three times as careful, three times as smart, and three times as polished and perfect in her presentations, her statements, and her actions, since the Male Controlled Mainstream Media tends to pick her apart three times harder than any of the male presidential candidates. Though it’s been vaguely mentioned that Obama also had contributions from the guy on the lam, whose name has been linked in the headlines and on the media leaders more often with this so-called scandal?
I think the smartest thing Edwards did is marry his wife, Elizabeth. Bypassing mainstream media via her blog to put the REAL message out there about what they both feel and how they both see the direction this Country should take, has been refreshing and powerful. And of course the Mainstream Media picks apart Elizabeth’s blog and belittles her efforts quite often, probably because Elizabeth is proactive against their reframing of her and John’s Message.
Now, if the Male Dominated FCC was doing their job and protecting the interests of The People (ALL the people, not just Male Corporate People) and fixing our broken and overly consolidated Media system so that our Democratic Voice couldn’t be silenced, nor our message reframed, nor our images retouched, maybe we’d be getting somewhere.
Of course, women do have some power in all this. Stop buying Mainstream Media. We Women do most of the purchasing, so if the ads don’t get in front of us, Mainstream Media starts losing revenue. If we choose against Mainstream Meda, because of the choices that Media is making, then maybe, just maybe, there will be some changes made.
Or not.

Thank you for the link to my post about America Ferrera and Glamour Magazine. I appreciate the context you’ve put it in here and the great point you’ve made reminding us that women have the power to not buy these messages.

You’re welcome, Maria. Your post is great and really puts body image into perspective, and the tie-in with who controls the media is pretty obvious. Since women have the purchasing power, the Mainstream Media will do their best to distort us, brainwash us and belittle us to get us to buy more product.
My solution to this state of affairs was to throw out my TV ten years ago. It’s amazing how much more original my thinking has become since then! There is something very perverted about what Mainstream Media does to us.
