Sometimes Democracy Actually Works- Health food supplements saved again
After an overwhelming (literally) response to the FDA call for comments to changes in the way Health Food Supplements are classified, there’s been an amendment accepted unanimously by the Senate (94 to 0) to the Enhancing Drug Safety and Innovation Act of 2007. The amendment states:
Sec. X08. Rule of Construction
Nothing in this title (or an amendment made by this title) shall be construed to affect–
(1) The regulation of dietary supplements under the Dietary Supplement
Health and Education Act; or
(2) The adverse event reporting system for dietary supplements created
under the Dietary Supplement and Nonprescription Drug Consumer Protection Act.
Hundreds of thousands of people submitted a comment to the FDA on this proposed change, so many that, according to Dr. Laibow of HealthFreedomUSA.org who spoke to a couple of the people who work for the FDA section responsible for receiving these comments, the whole system was clogged up, which means there were many more comments that were made but didn’t get through to the FDA.
Now if we could just get labelling on Genetically Altered or Engineered food, and disallow the inclusion of cloned meat and milk into our food supply, we’ll be making some headway towards taking charge of our own health and wellbeing, instead of the FDA/USDA and Big Pharma/Big Ag doing it for us.

[…] We are still not sure whether the Amendment which protects dietary supplements from further regulation was in fact incorporated into the bill passed by the Senate. Though the language of the amendment certainly making silk out of a sow’s ear, according to Dr. Laibow of the Natural Solutions Foundation, “Now that is good news but you will notice that the Durban Amendment does nothing whatsoever to protect foods and products not covered by DSHEA. This is a significant loophole and one which the House MUST correct if we are to have meaningful health freedom in this country.” […]
