Taking a HARD look at the Business of Politics

The Plog Politicians love to hate.

McCain, Worse than Bush? D5 Interviews show it could very well be.

Not only has McCain come out against Net Neutrality and even come close to saying that ISPs should be able to control Internet CONTENT (geez, just what we need, more Bud TV and the Home Shopping Network) but he’s also said that in Iraq we need to field MORE troops, not less, and certainly not a pullout. And the question of Iran needs to be met with strength (does that mean ANOTHER war? sounds like . . . ) since his answer was, “We must prevail. We will never surrender.”

McCain’s views on things from Iraq to technology issues came out during interviews conducted at the D5 Conference. There were some tough questions asked by Walt and Kara, and even more tough ones during Q&A, and the answers McCain gave tell me that this is a candidate who should never be elected to ANY office. His answer to everything seems to be “market forces are sufficient, we don’t need regulation” or “deal from a position of strength”, which points to more wars for the profiteers, and more monopolies here at home.

He even took a page out of the Telecomm handbook when asked about the Department of Education and whether it should be abolished, answering, “A: I wouldn’t abolish it, but I would sure try to fix it. Choice and competition is the fundamental solution to our education problems.” Geez, profiteering in Education too? Just what our kids need, curriculum written by Exxon/Mobil (oh, I forgot, they’ve got that now . . . )

This QA was also revealing– “Q: Do you believe that every American citizen is guaranteed a right to habeas corpus? A: Yes. But only Americans, not military combatants.” which I find amazing coming from an ex Vietnam POW.

If you are green, there is NOTHING here to like. He’d have us building Nuclear Power plants and growing more corn for Biofuel (a farm subsidy crop which pays BIG to Big Agribusiness, which Big Oil is heavily invested in.)

And apparently McCain went off on his own tangent in talking about Kiddie Porn, and how the tecnology sector has a responsibility to develop the tools to fight it (which usually means developing censorship tools, which, unfortunately, can also censor other things as well as their stated target. 4 more years of trashing the Constitution, and the right to free speech, if this guy is voted in.)

It was obvious to attendees that the candidate did study up on technology issues before the D5 conference, after some embarassing blunders when McCain spoke at Google prior to D5.

Bottom line after reading this, and watching the McCain Google video is that this guy is more nuts than the current cashew we have in the Oval Orifice. And the candidate’s understanding of the issues is a surface understanding. He learns enough to use the buzzwords, but is taking his policy cues from his campaign contributors. Be very afraid. If this guy were to be elected Democracy would for sure be totally and 100% replaced with Corporatocracy.

What a contrast with the statements recently made by Edwards, who is making all the right noises re technology and Iraq, and has made clear his thorough understanding of the underlying issues and pitfalls.

Interesting times ahead.

[To injured troops:] As you can probably see I was injured myself, not here at the hospital but in combat with a cedar. I eventually won.
