Taking a HARD look at the Business of Politics

Nashville tells FCC– NO MORE MEDIA CONSOLIDATION!

Over 500 citizens from 6 states, in addition to the Country Stars of Nashville, turned out for the FCC town meeting in Nashville, where the speakers were overwhelmingly in favor of stopping any further changes in Media Consolidation rules. Though stars like Naomi Judd and George Jones took the spotlight, this was by no means their meeting.

A broad-based coalition of local and national groups worked to turnout the public to the Nashville event. They included the American Federation of Musicians, American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), The Belcourt Theater, Center for Rural Strategies, Christian Community Broadcasters, Communications Workers of America, Consumers Union, EarthMatters Tennessee, Free Press, Mid-South Peace and Justice Center, Nashville Peace and Justice Center, Newspaper Guild-CWA, Prometheus Radio Project, Rainbow/PUSH, Tennessee Alliance for Progress, Tennessee Healthcare Campaign, Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition, Tennessee Independent Media Center, and WRFN Radio Free Nashville.

It’s pretty obvious that the great majority of the US population is against further relaxation of Media Consolidation rules. It’ll be interesting to see if Chairman Martin gets it. So far he’s ignored anyone who tries to tell him that what the corporations want is not what the people want. This is unfortunate since his job is to protect the rights of the people. Two of the six formal meeting have been overwhelmingly against allowing relaxation of these rules, and it doesn’t look like the next four will change that picture.
