Interestingly enough, while the “local” news services mentioned the bill was still sitting there earlier tonight, they didn’t delve into it any further. And I haven’t been able to find out anything more at this point in time (9:06pm MST).

And that’s NOT “separation of church and state”. It’s also not the culture getting sideways on the church.

I should perhaps point out that I’ve been married to a Mormon for over 30 years (ah…. he’s been “inactive” for way longer than that due to his own clashes with the “culture”); and that he was born and brought up in southern Utah before moving to Las Vegas. As well, we have now been resident in southern Utah for 20 years; it’s not as if I’m looking at the issues from the outside in….

While that is a dark cloud on the horizon from a number of civil libteries issues, I agree to do it because the Church needs to be unified in its purpose…that of being a Church and furthering Christ’s work. I truly am beginning to realize that they are indeed separate.

I had a friend named Scott Miller, one of the greatest guys I ever knew. We often discussed the fact that you have a and LDS Church and a Mormon Culture. A lot of the time of the Church is making sure the Culture doesn’t go off the reservation from the Church, I think. I am pretty sure this is a case of a bunch of guys going off the reservation.

They seem to have lost some steam on this. Day before yesterday, there was the beginning of a piece on the news - about how much (in MILLIONS of dollars) a law like this was likely to cost the state, etc. Of course, the news station “lost the feed” in the middle of the piece, so I really don’t know right now just exactly what’s going on.

I’m sure there’s something about the whole thing on one or the other of the news stations’ websites - but they use some absolutely abominable tracking stuff, so I won’t allow them to hit my computer. And since the horrible tragedy in Trolley Square on the 12th, other stuff has rather taken a backseat in the news broadcasts, as it should with 6 people dead and 4 others in serious to critical condition.

I *think* from the bits I heard before the feed went south, that this has been remanded to committee for “further study”.

I do so deeply wish that SOMEONE would get the church OUT of the state here….

I think what pisses me off most about this whole deal is that ANY religious sect pushing their version of what’s right into our country’s legislation is in the wrong. Even the Bible (no matter whose version, they all seem to have some version of the old testament bits, anyway) in the story of Cain and Abel, says we have a choice. According to the Book, we each of us have a responsibility to choose our own path, whether good or evil, so anyone who attempts to make that choice for me or anyone else is going against the law of God.

Separation of Church and State. Yeah.

My understanding was that the Church’s position on abortion was that it was wrong, but certainly APPROPRIATE if needed to save the life of the mother.

The idea, and this is from a Mormon male, that someone would try to add insult to injury by declaring a woman as a murderess when she has an abortion out of desperation is insane, or, God Forbid impose the death penalty on her? Craziness. Your outrage is justified at those men if this is true.

I cannot believe this is sanctioned by the Church, though, because the law makes no sense. There is nothing to be accomplished by this law nor this stance. All it sounds like is a few dumbasses are acting out anger issues with the women in their lives.

As for trying to pass a law binding on the actions of a Utah-an in another state, I would remind Utah that their citizens are not property of the State of Utah and someone will get their ass handed to them by the Supreme Court I am pretty sure on this. I cannot see how it would be enforceable.

I will look into this because I would rather lose ALL my children than my lady. She may not feel the same way about me, but this is how I feel.

Nah…it is more than troubling. Makes me want to smack the guy who started pushing this in the head. I doubt it is enforceable in any way.

Religion - not only Mormon, but Catholic and Muslim (which all exalt the “patriarchal” male and denigrate the female - EXCEPT if there’s a “pregnancy problem”) - has a very great deal to answer for.
