Biofuels CREATE more CO2 than it saves
Geez, the Peak Oil groups have been pointing this out for a long time. It’s about time that the NYT got with the program, and reported this study about Biofuels being a Greenhouse Threat.
Too bad they didn’t catch this already reported story when it was originally reported, and in time to stop all the harebrained SUBSIDIES AND INCENTIVES that are now making millions for Big Agribusiness and will make it tough to enact any real legislation to stop the madness. Especially since farmers in Brazil are ripping out rainforest at an alarming rate so they can plant soybeans and sugarcane for biofuels. “Dr. Searchinger said the only possible exception he could see for now was sugar cane grown in Brazil, which take relatively little energy to grow and is readily refined into fuel. He added that governments should quickly turn their attention to developing biofuels that did not require cropping, such as those from agricultural waste products.” I didn’t read the study itself, but one other thing that bears mentioning that I don’t see in the article is that even using agricultural waste products also carries a price in CO2, since that biomass won’t go back into the soil as compost. Which points at artificial fertilizers, and where are THEY gonna come from when the oil runs out?
Freaking MADNESS. And all that dough spent on subsidies to something totally unsustainable is NOT being put into research into Solar, Geothermal, Tidal, Wind and other forms of truly sustainable energy.
