Wiretapping perspective from Studs Terkel
The NYTimes this morning has an OpEd piece from Studs Terkel on the whole issue of Wiretapping and Telecomm Immunity. Terkel was one of the people who was persecuted during the McCarthy Era simply because he signed petitions against injust laws, such as the Jim Crow laws and poll taxes. His ability to work in the Media of the time was stripped away by his blacklisting. Not only was he persecuted then, he’s also a plaintiff in one of the lawsuits against the Telecomms wiretaps now.
If you’ve never read anything by Terkel, he’s a window into the soul of the American People, and usually writes with humor and an in-depth insight born of his experiences, good and bad. There is nothing he finds humorous about the current state of affairs though, which is what maybe worries me the most, since Studs usually finds most things have an element of humor in them.
It’s informative that he sees this current Constitutional Crisis as a watershed moment that We, The People, need to address.
